                                                                 LECTURES

The Japanese Quilt - Lecture and quilt show, approximately 1 hour.

Description:  An overview of Japanese quilting emphasizing the cultural and philosophical beliefs that form the Japanese idea and ideal of "beauty."   The quilt show consists of approximately 20 Japanese quilts.

Japanese Fabric - Yin & Yang - Lecture and fabric show, approximately 1 hour.

Description:  An introduction to Japanese fabric:  yakata, aizome, katazome, shibori, kasuri, ikat, batik.......  Explore the world of Japanese fabric and learn how they  are made and how to use them in your quilts.  The fabric show will display samples of each of the fabric types. 

The Colors of Japan - Lecture and quilt show, approximately 1 hour

Description:  Introduction to the Japanese concept of color and its application.  Learn about the five colors of Japan, which colors enhance one another and which colors fight with one another.  Every color has meaning and is symbolic of a cosmic force.  Learn how to harness these elements and enhance your color "sense" with an easy-to-use formula for choosing fabrics for quilts of any type.  Quilt show of approximately 10 quilts.

WORKSHOPS

Japanese Aesthetics and Design Principles - (2- or 3-day workshop)  Can be tailored to fit a 1-day format.

Description:  An introduction to Japanese quilt design.  Students will learn the philosophical components of Japanese quilt design and how to apply the principles.  Students will work with basic geometric shapes to design a quilt.

Understanding the Elements I - (2- or 3-day workshop)

Description:  An introduction to the "elements" - earth, metal, water, wood, and fire - and their associated "meanings."  This workshop provides the basis for Japanese quilt composition using the symbolism of the elements in color, shape, and design.  Students will make the "Elements" quilt.

                                       

Understanding the Elements II - (2- or 3-day workshop)

Description:  (Prerequisite:  Understanding the Elements I)  Students will build upon the basic "elements" knowledge.  Introduction to Japanese art motifs and symbolism.  Students will design their own Japanese quilts.
